Rise of the 1990s supers: Naomi Campbell shines in Cavalli campaign
As the Spring 2012 fashion ads come flooding in, Roberto Cavalli’sSteven Meisel-shot campaign highlights the renaissance of the supermodel, with Naomi Campbell taking a starring role alongsideKristen McMenamy, Karen Elson and Daphne Groeneveld.
While Groeneveld is 17, Campbell, McMenamy and Elson are all in their 30s and 40s, signaling a stark contrast to fashion’s fascination with teenage models in recent years; watch a just-released behind-the-scenes video from the campaign at http://youtu.be/vJpWoNJA5bw.
Campbell’s presence in particular marks the recent rise of the original supermodel, with the 1990s’ biggest names becoming increasingly prevalent in the past few months.
Since appearing in the music video for British band Duran Duran’s single “Girl Panic” alongside fellow supers Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford, Eva Herzigova, and Yasmin Le Bon back in November, 41-year-old Campbell has also been unveiled as the face of Italian label Pinko’s Spring 2012 adcampaign, as well as appearing on Harper’s Bazaar UK’s December 2011 issue alongside her video co-stars.
Meanwhile, fellow “Girl Panic” super Le Bon was this week announced as the face of Joseph Ribkoff’s Spring 2012 collection.
