Jewelry designer Pamela Love features in US magazine Fast Company’s annual ranking of the “100 Most Creative People in Business,” which also honors sites including Fashion.me and Moda Operandi.

Fashion heavyweights to have been honored by Fast Company in the past include Céline creative director Phoebe Philo and Tom Ford, so an appearance for rising New York jewelry designer Pamela Love is a real coup.

The creator appears at number 93 in the compilation for her tough skull and spike inspired creations, which also earned her a nomination at the upcoming CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Awards.

Meanwhile, Brazilian duo Flavio Pripas and Renato Steinberg appear at number 54 in the list for cofounding Fashion.me., a site where users can mix and match, dress virtual models, tag photos, and let fellow members suggest outfit combinations.

Other websites in the top 100 include Aslaug Magnusdottir’s Moda Operandi, which comes in at number 78 and lets shoppers stay ahead of the fashion pack by preordering designs right after runway shows.

Also worth a mention is actress-turned-beauty entrepreneur Jessica Alba, who made number 17 for her business The Honest Company, which specializes in eco-friendly baby diapers and non-toxic bath and skin products. The company’s hip product design is inspired by “French soap makers and designers like Alexander McQueen.”

The artist that made these songs # 1′s ”Love to Love You Baby”, “On the Radio”, “She Works Hard for the Money”, “Bad Girls”, Donna Summer, is dead at the age of 63 of cancer.

Donna Summer was the “Queen of Disco” in an age of shiny clothing, sparkly excess. and a Studio 54 mentality.

Summer’s tried to hide her illness from everyone, and sources say even as recently as two weeks ago she seemed to not be in that bad of shape. Her close friends said she did not want everyone to know, according to a report noted in TMZ.

Beside some decisions that she said helped lead her down a road to depression and addiction, she also had little controversy in her life making statements that were seemingly judgmental and insensitive to many in an era when AIDS was becoming an epidemic and still pegged as a homesexual’s disease (though she apologized later for them).

Her greatness in opening up a whole era and style of dance club music that many artists today have embraced and/or carried into their own styles of club music will definitely keep us dancing either through remix or style.

“I didn’t want to show my pain. I resisted, I hesitated, I tried to be invisible, to pretend that nothing was wrong,” Rykiel writes. According to WWD, Sonia has had to disguise her symptoms (including never being photographed with the cane she uses) until they’ve recently become more severe. Sonia’s daughter, Nathalie (Sonia famously designed her first sweater when pregnant with her) has been heading up the creative team at Sonia Rykiel since 1995.

Go see vintage gowns in person on Friday or Saturday at 201 Mulberry Street, (212) 334-0288, and place a rental order at a discount for your next fete.

And if that isn’t enough access to the Decades treasure chest, Mr. Silver and Mr. Garkinos are putting on a trunk show benefiting the The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center on Tuesday and Wednesday. The offerings include a special bounty from the wardrobe of Lyn Revson, a New York fashion icon of the 1970s and ’80s, and pieces by the likes of Chanel, Chloé and Hermès from the Decades closets. On the second day, walk away with any pair of shoes for $150. At 1440 Third Avenue, (212) 535-1250; decadesinc.com.

For five winters, the JINGLE pop-up shop in Chelsea Market has provided charming holiday gifts for scores of New York shoppers. This year, a spring version of the temporary bazaar, understandably named Springle, is up and running through Sunday. Jewelry, clothing, accessories and home goods are exhibited by 18 vendors, including Fred Flare and Hudson Valley Hatworks. For those with a green thumb, stylish planted terrariums and potted perennials are available from Linden Hill Gardens, Martha Stewart’s gardening go-to. At 75 Ninth Avenue.

SALES

Now that Jil Sander’s line for Uniqlo has been discontinued, it’s harder to gain access to the label’s sophisticated designs without spending a fortune. This week, the task is less onerous. Winter and spring JIL SANDER merchandise for women is 80 to 85 percent off through Saturday at 8 Crosby Street, fourth floor;jilsander.com. A wide range of items is included in the sale, but plush winter coats that were nearly $5,000 and are now around $1,000 are screaming to be purchased and put away for next year.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: April 25, 2012

A previous version of this article erroneously stated that a limited collection of vintage dresses from Decades would be available via Rent the Runway. There will in fact be only vintage accessories available.

One year after some two billion people around the world tuned into watch Prince William marry Kate Middleton, the global media remain captivated with the lives of the now Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The wedding fervour, which saw a million Britons cram the streets of London on April 29, 2011 to catch a glimpse of the future king and queen, has inevitably faded with the memory of the fairytale dresses, uniforms and horse-drawn carriages.

But royal watchers and many members of the public believe the couple have boosted the monarchy’s popularity and offer an escape for a nation beset by recession, unemployment and financial insecurity.

Even if, as naysayers argue, the duke and duchess are merely celebrities whose wealth and style are out of reach of all but a few, their popularity reaches far beyond Britain.

Media outlets in Britain, the United States, Canada and beyond remain enamoured with Catherine and second-in-line-to-the-throne Prince William.

“I think it’s been a complete triumph for them,” Claudia Joseph, a biographer of Catherine, said of their first year of married life.

Where the couple, and their PR team, have been particularly successful, commentators say, is in projecting the image of a relatively ordinary pair, albeit it one that has access to palaces, castles, glitzy red carpets and the odd butler or two.

While William has been working as a rescue helicopter pilot in north Wales, they have stayed in a rented home on the island of Anglesey, a move that has helped them build the “couple-next-door” idea.

“William drives himself to work, enjoys a pint in the local pub, Kate shops at the local supermarket, cooks for her husband, they go for walks, go to cinema, watch television,” Joseph said.

MEDIA MESMERISED

Some newspapers have followed the royal couple with a commitment bordering on obsession.

Barely a day goes by when either the Daily Mail or Daily Telegraph — as right-leaning publications natural allies to the monarchy — do not splash images of them over their pages, usually accompanied with gushing prose.

On Friday, the Daily Mail featured photographs of the duke and duchess attending an official function on its front page and again on page 3 and 27.

The Telegraph devotes its main front page picture to Prince William holding a baby and page 4 to a story of how Queen Elizabeth and father-in-law Prince Charles get on well with Catherine.

Often stories are about official engagements, including visits to charities, trips abroad and movie premieres.

They also focus on fashion, with the duchess seen as a key arbiter of taste whose choice of clothes and accessories sends items flying off the high street shelves.

“Catherine’s style spans the catwalk and the high street and she is a great champion of British brands, making her an excellent style ambassador,” said Caroline Rush, chief executive of the British Fashion Council.

In one of the more bizarre examples, pictures of the duchess playing field hockey led to a surge in interest in the sport — one online retailer saw sales of hockey sticks surge 238 percent in the days after she paid a visit to the British Olympic team.

Some articles have ventured into pure speculation.

“Kate Middleton’s sexy underwear secret revealed!” ran a headline on the website of celebrity Now magazine, followed by an unsourced story based on conjecture.

If and when the couple have a baby is currently top of the “guessing games”, followed by speculation over whether the duchess has an eating disorder — a sensitive topic given that William’s late mother Princess Diana, to whom Kate is inevitably compared, suffered from bulimia.

Coverage has extended to Kate’s sister Pippa, who also shot to global fame as a result of her appearance as maid of honour at the royal wedding.

A recent trip to party in Paris may have caused royal blushes after Pippa was criticised for being photographed in a car with a man wielding what looked like a pistol at pursuing paparazzi.

Generally, however, the press has been overwhelmingly favourable, although anti-monarchist group Republic counters that support for the royals is weaker than headlines suggest.

It said this week that polls showed a fall in the number of people believing Britain would be worse off without the royals — down to 51 percent from 63 percent this time last year.

Only 41 percent said they believed the monarchy was a unifying force, with 32 percent saying it made no difference.

“These polls put the lie to the claim that the monarchy is enjoying a resurgence of popularity,” Republic’s chief executive Graham Smith said. “No poll over the past 18 months has shown any increase in support for the monarchy.”

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

However, royal officials believe that austere economic times have added to the monarchy’s allure.

“Continuity and stability has strength in its own rights while everything else is in a state of flux,” one senior royal aide told Reuters on condition of anonymity, due to the palace’s demands for discretion in dealing with the press.

“One of its roles in a way is to provide a sort of ballast to the nation, a solid foundation, and it probably comes to the fore more obviously in difficult times.

“You saw that with the royal wedding last year. People realised they could have a celebration. It was something that people turned to very naturally.”

The queen may well be grateful to her grandchildren for casting the royals in a positive light, following a series of scandals including popular Diana’s death in a Paris car crash aged 36.

The 86-year-old monarch is gearing up for a weekend of national celebrations in early June to mark her 60th year on the throne, a spectacular event expected to draw more huge crowds to London and media attention from around the world.

In sharp contrast to their very public wedding, the duke and duchess will be avoiding the limelight on their anniversary on Sunday at a long-planned event with friends at an undisclosed location in Britain, their spokesman said.

While on vacation with her nieces in India, Anna Sui was inspired by the intricate geometric patterns of the saris prints. Taking these ideas of intricate symmetry and applying them to pillow covers, bedding, and more, Anna has fused ethnic authenticity with modern boutique flair.

“I had always loved hand-printed textiles from India, and I came up with these ideas, which turned into this little bedding collection,”

-(Anna Sui)

The pieces themselves are patterned with floral arrangements, shaded with purple and black accents. The designs are as unique as they are personal and will with no doubt be a perfect match for personal homes – hotels across the globe.

The prince range of the new collection ranges from $50 – $423 depending on which products you purchase, and are available at Anna Sui’s New York City flagship store.

This added touch of glamor to her customer’s work place will accomplish her brands goal of developing a personal relationship with each client. This pillow will help support the owner’s head when they rest, and will certainly add a new sense of fashion to their dreams. Anna Sui states;

“I hope everyone’s dreams will be sweeter in Anna Sui sheets”

The first issue of the biannual magazine, set to retail at $9.95, will be launched this September, with half of the distribution to be in Europe and the rest across Asia and the US.

Although CR will be an English-language publication, Roitfeld explained that certain articles should be published in the native language of the author, with translations at the back.

The publication will have unconventional sections including “Muses” and “Icons,” while the focus is on longer-format articles. Meanwhile, fashionistas will be able to read shorter content on fashion, art and culture by subscribing to crfashionbook.com.

While Roitfeld is well known for the often provocative and boundary-pushing imagery seen in French Vogue during her time at the helm, the editor told WWD April 9 that she will “find new ways to be irreverent” when styling shoots for CR.

“Not necessarily safer, but different,” she added.

Since departing from French Vogue in January last year, Roitfeld has kept busy working on projects including a book with Karl Lagerfeld on Chanel’s iconic little black jacket, penning a tome on her career called Carine Roitfeld: Irreverent, as well as styling gigs for the likes of department store Barneys New York and guest-editing publications includingVMan.

Once, we thought high-street collections ‘designed’ by celebrities were naff. Now a CEO’s daughter is getting in on the act

So far the fashions this year have been pretty good! Ladylike pastels, heels getting lower, It bags going the way of harem trousers. Is the fashion world becoming sensible?

Melanie, London

Ah, Melanie. Come here, you sweetly optimistic if naive young thing. Come here and let me shatter your innocent peace of mind, like a Cassandra figure in a horror movie who points out to the heroine that, actually, the psychopathic killer hasn’t been destroyed at all but is actually standing right behind her, scythe raised and ready to fall. For I must whisper three words in your ears: Chloe Green Shoes. Oh dear God!

Chloe Green, for those who have not had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of this precocious young lady in the tabloids or on reality TV shows, is the daughter of Philip Green, overlord of swaths of this country’s high streets and best mate of Gwyneth Paltrow, Leo DiCaprio and Kate Moss, all of whom would still adore “Uncle Phil” even if he weren’t the ninth richest man in Great Britain. It’s his famously appealing personality they enjoy, you know, not his private jet.

I must take caution when writing about this charming chap, as he has form in making his displeasure very known to this newspaper whensomething appears in it that is not a press release about how great he is. I myself have felt the sharp edge of his displeasure when I was sent summarily out of his office by the man himself with the words “antisemitic newspaper” ringing in my ears. Not even my protestation that both my editor and myself are, in fact, chosen people, assuaged his ire.

Anyway, Sir Phil is not our subject today (thank the Old Testament God) – ’tis his daughter Chloe. Raised on the mean streets of Monaco and with nothing to keep her entertained other than Daddy’s £7m plane and £20m yacht.

Like many before her, Chloe dabbled in reality TV so that people could, as she said, “see the real me”. Truly, there is no better way to prove how down-to-earth one is than showing off one’s tongue piercing on Made in Chelsea.

In a turn of events absolutely no one could have predicted, Chloe is now branching out into shoe design, presumably having opted against DJing and lingerie manufacturing, the usual pastimes of the young, moneyed and untrained. To be fair to Chloe, with regard to training, she professes to own more than 70 pairs of Christian Louboutin shoes, which is, really, the same as a PhD in cordwainery from the London College of Fashion. As yet, only one photo of Chloe’s wares has been released and it is, I can reveal, an open-toed silver ankle boot, and is about 8in high, so the perfect shoe if you’re a young ex-reality TV star who only needs to walk from chauffeured car to private jet. It also has green soles, which I’m assuming is some reference to her middle name “Jade” and is absolutely not a rip-off of the red-soled schtick perfected by Louboutin. According to the last reports, Chloe had six in-house buyers and designers and an unspecified budget from her dad, the CEO of Topshop, to help get this venture off the ground.

“She hopes,” one newspaper reported without a hint of sarcasm, “to sell the line at Topshop.” Chloe, darling, I don’t think you need to lose any sleep over that concern.

Now, I have no problem with wealthy children of celebrities working. Heck, better them doing that than being Peaches Geldof. Until the day she dies, Stella McCartney will have to endure accusations that her success is due to the proceeds of Abbey Road and her father’s front-row presence. In fact, McCartney is a very good designer and the fact that she chose a career that has nothing to do with her parents is precisely what separates her from, say, the Sean Lennons of this world.

Maybe Chloe will turn out to be the next Manolo Blahnik. For her sake, I hope so. But when someone is apparently unaware that their heavy reliance on their parents’ connections and money in order to achieve their career ambitions will always raise questions about their true merit, it does make me question their judgment in other areas.

Once high-street collections “designed” by celebrities seemed the epitome of naffness. Now we’ve got collections designed by CEO’s kids. It’s enough to make you sentimental for Lily Allen for New Look, ain’t it?

HERB RITTS died nearly 10 years ago, at age 50. Since then the world that he dominated as a photographer — fashion, beauty, celebrity — has changed dramatically, leaving a stillness where his energetic ideas once existed. As the years go by, as images of a hyper-glamour become the norm, as visual memories seem almost a grab bag of tricks, you become more aware of what a giant the man was. He was certainly a link to George Hoyningen-Huene and Edward Weston; he also belongs in the tradition of Richard Avedon, Louise Dahl-Wolfe and Irving Penn. More simply, you cannot imagine the 1980s and ’90s in America without the photographs of Herb Ritts.

Early next month, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles will open the first major exhibition of his work since a show in 1996, at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. That exhibition broke records with more than 253,000 visitors, despite criticism that Mr. Ritts’s work was “formulaic” and that the museum was pandering to a celebrity-obsessed public. Yet, Mr. Ritts captured a time that seems remarkably uninhibited.

You could get excited by a Ritts picture. And there was a sense of joy and fun in the picture-taking. “He wasn’t someone who had everything scripted,” said Paul Martineau, associate curator of photography at the Getty, who organized the show. “He approached shoots organically.”

Mr. Martineau spent months going through some 1,000 boxes of photos at the Herb Ritts Foundation. Many of those images, like a 1993 photograph of Cindy Crawford in a Ferré dress at Malibu, Calif., may have appeared once in a magazine or were never seen at all. The exhibition, which runs through Aug. 26, will have 87 framed images, along with other work from magazines and books. Mr. Martineau said he made an initial cut of 800 images, ultimately focusing on fashion, athletes and dancers, and nudes. “I didn’t want as many celebrities because I felt they had been given a lot of time,” he said, adding, “I was interested in the most elegant work rather than the most whimsical.”

“He really exported an L.A. style around the world,” he said. That was true of his quality of lighting — Mr. Ritts denied that it was anything special — and also of his reverence for beauty.
